Repair Cafes pair up people who have broken stuff with people who enjoy repairing things. Events bring community volunteers together and offer their skills to help repair items that are broken or damaged, prolonging their useful life.
This activity is good for wellbeing because
- Your treasured items avoid going to landfill so you are playing a part in tackling climate change
- Repair cafes bring communities together to share ideas and exchange skills
- Repairing things, rather than replacing them, saves people money

What to Expect
Repair Cafes are held at various locations, every few months throughout the year. A good way to find out about them is on local social media pages as they don’t have a central feed, or check the upcoming events page here. Once there is a cafe planned near you, it’s best to book some time with them as they can be very popular and slots run out. You can find event-specific contact details via the Cambridgeshire Repair Cafe Network for which there is a link below. Each event will have a variety of repairer volunteers, usually across electricals, textiles, carpentry and mechanical fixes. If you’re not sure whether your item is suitable, there is a ‘What Types of Thing Can I Bring Along’ segment on the CCF page.
When you arrive, you’ll find volunteers at different ‘stations’ and there will also be somewhere to grab a hot drink and sit while you’re waiting. Someone will be available to sign you in and help you take your object to the right person. While your fix is being looked at, you can chat with the volunteer, so there is the opportunity to learn too.
More Information
Repair Cafes in East Cambs are part of the Cambridgeshire Repair Cafe Network and the bigger UK Community Repair Network.
If you have skills that you’d like to offer as a volunteer fixer, you can find out more on the Cambridge Carbon Footprint website here. Registering your interest is easy using the Volunteer Cambs platform where roles are listed.
Burwell Repair Cafe has its own webpage, as does Ely Repair Cafe. Soham Repair Cafe has its own Facebook Page
You can find out more about the ethos of repair cafes and other local climate-friendly initiatives on the East Cambridgeshire Climate Action Network webpage here.
It is free to attend a repair cafe although there is a suggested donation of £5 per item which contributes to on-going running costs such as venue hire, refreshments and materials used in fixes.
