Wellbeing Walks with Ramblers Association

Back to Activities

Wellbeing walks are short, sociable group walks led by friendly, trained leaders who provide encouragement and support. They are open to everyone regardless of age, fitness or ability and welcome those less able or who may be facing a mental health challenge.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • Walking is a gentle form of exercise making it an excellent choice for those who find staying physically fit a challenge
  • Wellbeing walks offer opportunities to meet other people from your community which can help reduce the risk of loneliness or isolation
  • Being outside in nature is great for your mental health

What to Expect

Wellbeing Walks are sociable group walks led by trained leaders. They are open to adults of any age, fitness or ability but many are aimed at those who are less active. Wear comfortable clothes and shoes that are weather-appropriate. Bring some water to drink.

The walk leader will meet the group at the designated start point and everyone sets off together, on time. The intention is to walk at a consistent but steady pace, making sure no-one gets left behind. Many people will take the opportunity to chat with each other but it’s also fine if you just want to enjoy the movement and the views. Some groups will also go for a coffee afterwards, this varies from location to location.

More Information

Participating in a walk requires you to have registered with The Ramblers via their website. You only need to sign up initially and then you can join walks anywhere in the UK. It’s free to join and a very quick and easy process to complete your basic details.

Anglesey Abbey
Meet in the Anglesey Abbey overflow carpark to join this friendly, well-established group for a moderate/faster paced walk around the Lode countryside. There are toilet facilities and a cafe at the meeting place. Routes may include muddy/uneven ground. Walks are weekly on Thursdays.

Ashley
Meet in the carpark at Ashley Pavilion (toilet facilities available) to join this group walk around the local fields of Ashley. Walks are on the 1st Thursday of the month, come rain or shine, and take approximately an hour, at a gentle pace, returning to the Pavilion afterwards for refreshments. Routes will vary, most include a combination of walking beside roads, with or without footpath, well used routes across fields and some uneven surfaces on footpaths.

Stetchworth
Meet at the Ellesmere Centre (toilet facilities available) for a sociable group walk around the local countryside. New walkers are asked to arrive 10 mins early to meet the Walk Leader and you can contact The Ellesmere Centre on 01638 508212 if you have any questions beforehand. Walks are weekly, on Thursday at 2pm.

Burwell
Group leader, Sara, leads this walk around Burwell at a gentle pace for approximately 1 hour. Routes vary and may sometimes include muddy paths. Walks are weekly, on Fridays at 10am, meeting at Burwell War Memorial where there is a carpark nearby.

Wicken Fen
This welcoming group meet at the entrance to the visitor centre at Wicken Fen. If you are driving, remember to pay for parking or register your NT membership card at one of the machines in the carpark. Routes are mostly off road so may be uneven/muddy, and last around 1 hour. There are toilets and a cafe at the centre and people often stay for a cuppa afterwards. Walks are currently on Fridays at 10am.

Soham
To join this slower-paced group for a gentle walk around Soham, meet outside the library on College Road, around the corner from the main entrance. Walks are currently on alternate Tuesdays at 10am.

Ely Country Park
Meet at the Fisherman’s Carpark off Willow Walk, 5 minutes before the walk start for a quick briefing before the group sets off. Footpaths around Ely Country Park are a mixture of surfaced and grass and generally approached with a consistent, moderate pace. The walk leader will highlight opportunities for mindfulness and point out the wildlife around. The nearest toilets are at Ship Lane Carpark and walkers often head to an Ely cafe afterwards. Walks are currently on alternate Wednesdays at 10am.
