What to do when someone dies

Back to Support

The death of a family member is stressful and difficult, especially if you are not sure what steps need to be taken. Here are some sources of information and support that offer practical advice on what you might need to do or consider.

What to do when someone dies: step by step
This UK Government page lays out things such as how to register the death, notify government departments and deal with the estate. They also cover how to get help for costs of funerals for children.

What to do after a death
This Citizen’s Advice page is similar to the Government one but goes into more detail and covers some additional issues such as cremations, memorials, and miscarriages, stillbirths, and deaths of babies.

They also list contact details for many bereavement support groups.

What to do when someone dies
Age UK offers advice and steps that overlap the above, with an emphasis on older people.
