Bookswaps in East Cambs

Back to Activities

Bookswaps are an informal way to share books and other publications with other members of your community. Often housed in bus stops, unused phoneboxes and community venues, people can donate unwanted books and borrow from those offered on the shelves.

This activity is good for wellbeing because

  • If you like to flick through your reading material first and find getting to the library a challenge, you may find a bookswap closer to home that can offer you choice
  • Community services like these feel good to those involved. They can be an opportunity to cross paths with others and be a conversation starter
  • Learning is great for morale and cognitive function

Little Downham Village Hall
This bookswap is situated in the foyer immediately inside the entrance down the passage to the right of the hall. As well as free books to drop off and pick up, there are a selection of expired library books for sale for a small cost. This service is supported by the Little Downham Book Cafe which you can access via the first door on the right. The bookswap is accessible whenever the Village Hall is in use.

Littleport, St George's Church
Using the main entrance to St George's, continue straight on and a little to the left, you will see the bookswap shelves to your right, just before you reach the doors to the community room. This bookswap is accessible whenever the church is open to visitors.

Stetchworth, The Ellesmere Centre
The book swap at the Ellesmere Centre is directly in front of you when you enter the building via the main doors. There is a huge offering of books, magazines and DVDs, for which suggested donations are via an honesty box. Any funds collected help to support the various community activities taking place in the centre. If you have any books etc which you would like to drop off, please leave them with reception. It is accessible during Ellesmere Centre open hours.

Stretham Bookswap
To find this bookswap, go through the gate immediately off the High Street and as you quickly arrive at the entrance to the venue, you'll see the bookshelves on your left, under cover of the porchway. These shelves are accessible at all times.

Sutton Phonebox Library
As you face the One Stop shop on Sutton High Street, about 20m to the left is an area of grass, in front of which you can't miss the traditional red phonebox which houses this bookswap. You'll also find a seed swap box for anyone green fingered. The phonebox is always open.

Witchford Bookswap
At the Westerly end of Main Street, almost on the corner of Granta Place, there is a brick-built bus stop in which you'll find bookshelves and a couple of large plastic tubs offering a hug variety of books to choose from.

More Information

The idea of bookswaps is community bookshelves where people can donate and collect reading material including fiction, non-fiction, childrens books and sometimes magazines, jigsaw puzzles and DVDs. They are a way for local people to share resources and can be really useful for those who don't live near a library or want to grab a book at short notice. They work on a goodwill basis and often have a notice with guidelines for how the specific location operates. Occasionally there is an honesty box for donations.
